Ease of Use
Regardless of the platform, the Windscribe free VPN application looks exactly the same as the premium version. This means that you have a simple, intuitive and comfortable user experience.
Windscribe offers you a VPN server network and a power button: just select your location, turn it on and connect in seconds.
Given that this is a free version of the premium Windscribe VPN service, the 10 server countries provided are a great start, but Windscribe’s selection of city-specific servers really impressed us.
For example, the “US East” location allows you to choose between Windscribe’s VPN servers in Chicago, New York, and Washington DC, and two in Miami. There are two city-level options in the US Center (Atlanta and Dallas), the West in the US (Los Angeles and Seattle) and the UK.
Speed and Reliability
Despite the high percentage loss of speed, Windscribe’s speeds are still very promising for a free VPN service.

When using Windscribe free VPN:
Windscribe Free’s upload speeds were, in most cases, even faster than download speeds, and were a good choice for torrent (be aware of the data limit anyway). However, the same delay time of 18ms is not ideal for non-delay games.
Platforms and Devices
We’ve tested Windscribe’s free VPN applications on all of our operating systems and devices, including Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, and Linux, and have been constantly impressed. You can also set up Windscribe at the router level, and even if a router setup on your home network quickly fills the data limit, there is no limit to the number of concurrent connections you can have.
Windscribe’s free VPN service is even available on a number of devices, such as the rare Amazon Fire TV Stick and Apple TV, for a free VPN service.
Encryption and Security
Windscribe Free gives you full access to the same privacy settings as provided in the full version of the application; that is, you can choose from four different VPN protocols:
- OpenVPN (our favorite)
Windscribe Free also comes with a VPN kill switch feature that protects you from any potential disconnection, and you can even choose to manually set an IP address.
Windscribe’s desktop application also includes some advanced VPN settings, from proxy configuration to how your servers are sorted.
In addition, we tested Windscribe Free VPN for IP and DNS infiltrations and proved to keep you safe online.
Windscribe does not have a live chat support that is disappointing for a VPN provider of the size. The closest thing to live chat support is an automated chat bot.
Fortunately there are a number of useful help guides and FAQs available online, and if you still can’t find what you need, you can always send a support ticket.
