Ease of Use
There’s no other way to say it: SurfEasy has a chunky and cheap-looking app. We also had frustrating and random disconnects.
SurfEasy isn’t much fun compared to some of the well-designed, intuitive VPN applications on the market.
The home screen simplifies with the location you choose, the new IP address, and whether to enable ad tracker blocking.
The settings in SurfEasy’s settings menu are very low. There is no transparency in SurfEasy’s VPN protocol or the option to change it. Fortunately, after talking to the support team, we were able to verify that our personal favorite was OpenVPN.
If you are looking for a high level of configuration and advanced privacy settings, you should definitely avoid SurfEasy.
SurfEasy’s server network is one of the smallest we’ve seen connectable. There are 28 countries to choose from in SurfEasy. There is no city-level option in this list of countries.
SurfEasy serves 1000 servers in 28 countries. This number can cause a slow speed during peak times.
Europe is well served, as is the case in North America, which makes up 20 of 28 countries. If you are in these countries, your problems will not be so important.
Speed and Reliability
It’s not the fastest VPN, but SurfEasy’s speeds will still meet your needs.
It provides particularly good speeds in the same country locations. If you connect and use SurfEasy locally, you won’t have much trouble doing anything.
However, SurfEasy is below average for longer distance connections. We have achieved very low speeds when connecting to the US and Australia across the continents.
SurfEasy lags behind its competitors in terms of latency. It is not an ideal VPN for gamers.
Before using SurfEasy:
When you connect to SurfEasy:
Download speed without SurfEasy: 95.52Mbps
Download speed with SurfEasy: 71.51 Mbps
Loss of download speed while SurfEasy is running: 25%
Platforms and Devices
SurfEasy’s exclusive applications are available in:
This puts SurfEasy behind its competitors in terms of device compatibility.
Sorry, there is no manual workaround for devices that do not include native applications. For example, if you want to protect your Amazon Fire TV Stick, you need to install SurfEasy on your router.
SurfEasy allows the use of up to 5 devices to use a subscription at the same time.
Because SurfEasy is not installed at the router level, we cannot recommend it for those who want to use VPN on game consoles or streaming devices.
Pricing and Opportunities
You are very limited in how to pay for your SurfEasy subscription. Your options are limited to credit card or PayPal. SurfEasy also offers a free trial and a seven-day money back guarantee.
There is no time limit for a free trial, so you can use it as much as you want, but you are subject to a data limit of 500 MB, which means you can do no more than a few speed tests and a stream.
After you sign up, you have seven days to change your mind. SurfEasy’s refund guarantee doesn’t really ask you any questions, say you want to unsubscribe by simply emailing customer support without confidential data covers or restrictions.
Please note: If you purchase SurfEasy from the Apple App Store, you must go directly to SurfEasy for a refund.
Encryption and Security
SurfEasy takes the role of a VPN seriously, but doesn’t exactly match the top-level providers when it comes to security.
We did some research and discovered that SurfEasy’s desktop application works on OpenVPN, which is the most secure of various VPN protocols. This is a good thing.
The disadvantage of SurfEasy is that it does not have a VPN kill key. The kill key kills your entire internet connection if the service stops for any reason, thus keeping online visitors private. Without one, you risk exposing yourself to enthusiasts and hackers. Not having one is not a big problem for us, and for a VPN service of this size, this is not unusual.
Fortunately, all of your web traffic is routed through SurfEasy’s own secure DNS servers, rather than third-party ones like your Internet Service Provider or Google, protected from prying eyes and keeping your online activity private.
Another added bonus is a built-in ad tracker blocker that uses a unique algorithm to block the tracking cookies that advertisers use to track you online.
If you open this in the desktop app, you’ll be presented with the number of ads and viewers that have been blocked in the last 30 days, but we can’t be sure how accurate it is. Regardless, it seems to be a great property to have and works very well.
There is a live chat feature that responds fast and friendly. Here’s what we like to see. Unfortunately, it is not available 24/7. The website also offers a more personal touch to the help center and offers a pleasing phone number for those who want to communicate with people by voice.
Outside office hours, you can get support by email. However, I have found it slow, sometimes it took a day to respond. But when they answered, they were clear and spoke.
Do you recommend?
It will suffice for startup users. However, it is difficult for expert users who want to have all the ropes in their hands.
