Ease of Use
Navigating in Bitdefender VPN is incredibly simple and very easy, especially for beginners. Changing server locations in Bitdefender VPN is very easy, or there is an automatic setting that selects the best VPN server based on your physical location. Click Connect and you are ready to connect.
Our main problem with Bitdefender VPN is that you cannot install VPN itself. You must install the Bitdefender Total Security package that includes the Premium VPN service. This also means malware and ransomware protection for all your devices. It’s a good thing in terms of security, but if you’re already getting these services from other providers, that would be a bit of a nuisance.
However, Bitdefender is very easy to install. Sign up for an account, enter the activation code sent to your email address, and download the software to your device via your Bitdefender Central account.
Server Locations
Bitdefender’s VPN server network is small compared to other VPN services with 27 countries to choose from. There are a few Bitdefender server options in Asia and two locations in South America (Brazil and Argentina), but Africa does not currently have any options.
Speed and Reliability
Bitdefender VPN didn’t slow down our internet speed in our performance tests. It showed good values for use among the same countries.
Bitdefender is also a very fast VPN for international connection. The Canadian server returned at almost 50 Mbps, and the US server was not far behind. Given these results, you can do whatever you want online while you are connected to Bitdefender VPN.
Before using Bitdefender VPN:
When connecting to a Bitdefender VPN:
Download speed without Bitdefender VPN: 92.17Mbps
Download speed with Bitdefender VPN: 75.36Mbps
Download speed Bitdefender VPN: 18%
Bitdefender’s latency isn’t the fastest we’ve seen, but at 9ms on the same country connections, it shouldn’t be too much trouble for players. The connections were also very reliable, there was little fluctuation in the speeds between the tests and there was no decrease.
Platforms and Devices
Bitdefender VPN is currently only available on Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS devices.
There is no manual workaround for devices that do not have specific VPN applications, such as routers, so the only way to use Bitdefender VPN is to install it on any device you want to protect. Fortunately, you can use Bitdefender on up to five devices at the same time.
Lack of router compatibility means that you cannot install Bitdefender on your Amazon Fire TV Stick or other game consoles or streaming devices.
Bitdefender does not offer browser extensions for popular browsers.
Pricing and Opportunities
Bitdefender VPN has only two different pricing plans. Monthly and yearly. You need to sign up for Bitdefender Total Security for $ 39.99 a year, and then add the cost of the VPN.
Paying for a single monthly Bitdefender VPN is a more expensive option, coming in at $ 6.99, but it’s pretty cheap compared to other VPN services. However, if you sign up for a 12-month subscription, you’ll save yourself 52%, reducing the price to a very reasonable $ 3.33 per month.

Bitdefender also offers both a free VPN service and a 30-day money back guarantee to test the service.
Bitdefender’s free VPN service comes with the purchase of any Bitdefender product from Windows, MacOS, iOS, or Android. However, there are some limitations. There is a data limit of 200 MB per day and you will automatically connect to the ‘optimal’ server for your location.
Encryption and Security
Bitdefender VPN seems secure enough compared to other VPN services, but there is very little configurability within the applications itself. Nevertheless, all of the software is encrypted with top encryption AES-256.
Bitdefender’s Windows and Android applications use the OpenVPN protocol, while MacOS and iOS applications use HydraVPN, a special protocol created by Hotspot Shield that powers Bitdefender’s VPN service. It seems to offer a good level of protection but there is not much information about how it works exactly.
Bitdefender has a VPN kill key, but it is only available on Windows and Mac and has advanced settings for it. However, we are pleased to say that we have not experienced any IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks while connected to Bitdefender.
Customer Support
Navigating on Bitdefender’s website is not easy, so it can be difficult to find out where to get the right support. But once you know where you’re going, the resources are actually pretty good and there’s 24/7 live chat support.
Bitdefender also provides installation guides and troubleshooting instructions for the most common problems that are best known and should solve most of the problems you may encounter. Forums are also very useful, but they are mostly user-run, so they are not the most reliable source.
