Ease of Use
Avira Phantom’s free VPN applications are really easy to use, whether on mobile or on the desktop. Avira’s home screen is limited by an on / off button, your VPN server location, and the amount of data you have used so far.
You can view the complete list of Avira Phantom’s VPN server locations by clicking ‘Nearest location’, but not all of them are labeled ‘Pro’ and you can’t connect to them. Clicking ‘On’ will connect you to Avira’s nearest free VPN server.
Avira’s settings are behind the wheel icon in the upper right corner. These are few, but limited to whether you agree to send your diagnostic data to Avira.
Server Locations
Until recently, free users of Avira Phantom could connect to the same number of VPN servers as their premium users. But now that’s not the case. Avira’s free users can never manually select a VPN server location.
Instead, when you open the Avira Phantom application, you can only connect to the nearest VPN server location.
Speed and Reliability
Avira Phantom is one of the fastest free VPN services we’ve seen.
Before using Avira Phantom (free):
When we use Avira Phantom (free):
A 47% speed percentage loss may look very bad, but it’s actually pretty good in the free VPN world. The loading speed of the Avira also remained above 70Mbps.
Avira’s lag time is not the lowest level we see just below 20ms, but it shouldn’t affect you much unless you’re a serious player.
Overall, the speed of the Avira Phantom is sufficient for everyday users.
Platforms and Devices
There are free Avira Phantom VPN applications for the most popular devices, including:
- Microsoft Windows
- Mac os operating system
- iOS
- Android
Unfortunately, since it is not possible to install the Avira Phantom at the router level, the only way to use it is to download and install it separately on all devices you want to protect.
The good news is that you can use the Avira Phantom on as many devices as you want.
Avira Phantom currently offers a free browser extension for Google Chrome users.
Encryption and Security
Avira Phantom is doing its best to ensure your online security while connected to the VPN service. It uses first-class encryption (AES-256) and the most secure VPN protocol (OpenVPN), but there are no advanced settings.
We’d expect to see a VPN kill key, but the Avira Phantom (free) doesn’t even provide it. This means that if your VPN connection breaks unnoticed, your actual physical location may occur.
A very good feature of Avira Phantom (free) is that it runs its own VPN servers and also provides built-in protection against DNS infiltrations, which we found 100% effective in our latest tests.
Customer Support
Avira Phantom’s free users are currently unable to access any personal customer support. This means that users with free VPN accounts will not be able to send or call emails to Avira support representatives, which we often see from free VPN services, unless they upgrade to premium subscriptions.
