Ease of Use
AirVPN’s desktop VPN client called ‘Eddie’ is old, complex and downright confusing. A tech-savvy VPN user can love advanced features, but even technology literates will probably be forced.
AirVPN’s settings list is divided into tabs, each with different options. Since this may be confusing for less experienced VPN users, it would be nice to have the option to fully reset all settings to their default settings.
Choosing a VPN server is much more difficult than it should be. The list is long and there is no search feature.
AirVPN offers one of the smallest server networks we’ve seen among top-notch VPN services.
AirVPN provides 200 separate VPN servers that can only clog the server during peak times. Fortunately, the ‘server load’ section in the application makes it easy to see which locations are approaching capacity.
There are three city-level AirVPN servers in the UK (London, Maidenhead and Manchester) and Canada (Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver). Other countries with city-specific options include Germany, Spain and Sweden.
Europe has the best AirVPN coverage with 153 servers spread over 15 countries, while limited to Asia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.
South America is covered only by VPN servers in Brazil, while Africa is completely ignored by AirVPN.
Speed and Reliability
Although AirVPN does not reach the peak speeds of some of the fastest VPN services, it stands out for the reliability of the offer.
Because AirVPN is equally fast on both connections in the same country and over longer distances, you’ll be able to do anything you want without sweating while you’re connected to the VPN.
Before using AirVPN:
When you connect to AirVPN:
Download speed without AirVPN: 96.60 Mbps
Download speed with AirVPN: 71.59Mbps
Loss of download speed when running AirVPN: 26%
AirVPN’s upload speeds were also fast, almost 75 Mbps when connected to the VPN server in the same country. Perfect to open the torrent.
Still, it’s not the ideal VPN for gamers, the ping times are around 18ms, even when connected to a VPN server in the same city.
Platforms and Devices
AirVPN offers custom VPN applications for:
- Microsoft Windows
There is also an AirVPN installation guide for iOS, but requires the installation of third-party OpenVPN software. AirVPN also provides a native VPN application for Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.
Unfortunately, AirVPN doesn’t offer many browser plug-ins for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Pricing and Opportunities
Each AirVPN pricing plan includes the same features. However, if you make a long-term subscription, it will be cheaper on a monthly basis. When you make a 2-year subscription, which is the most advantageous subscription plan, the monthly payment equals $ 3.69.
AirVPN offers a free trial that can be obtained using the coupon code they send you when you send a message to the support team. We received it in less than a day, but people reported that they were waiting for code for more than 24 hours in forums.
A money back guarantee is also available, but this is only valid for three days, which is very small compared to the other 30 days offered by other VPN services. Fortunately, they do not ask questions and refunds are usually returned to your bank within two business days.
Encryption and Security
AirVPN is a fantastic choice if your privacy is your priority. Encryption is best achieved through encryption AES-256, and the software only runs on OpenVPN, which offers the best security / performance balance.
AirVPN’s protection against DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leaks has also proven to be 100% effective in our latest tests.
You can use AirVPN to access the TorV browser, giving you an extra layer of encryption when you need it. The desktop application also offers ‘doublehop’, a feature that changes your IP address regularly to avoid tracking your location.
The live support line is slow. However, we love the extensive knowledge base on the AirVPN website. There are also a number of AirVPN community forums covering every topic you can think of, so you may find that you don’t really need to contact the support team often.
Do you recommend?
We recommend AirVPN, but with a serious warning: AirVPN is definitely not a good VPN for beginners. It provides super secure and fast download speeds, but takes some time to get used to.
