Best Free VPN Reviews and Tips

It is attractive to use a free VPN. The idea of avoiding anonymous internet browsing and geo blocking at zero cost is sometimes too strong to resist. Why pay for a VPN when you have a free one?

But the truth is that most free VPNs are not reliable. Many of them have serious security vulnerabilities, are affected by ads (and adware), and you share your data with third parties.

More than 500 million people may have unknowingly been using unsecured VPN lately! At this point you should be wondering: is it possible to get a completely free and secure VPN?

Yes it is. We have tested more than 150 free VPN applications, and in this guide we recommend the safest, fastest and most reliable ones.

It’s also 100% free, so you can enjoy online privacy and security without spending money. Some even (sometimes) work with real-time streaming services like Netflix.

Read our unbiased review of each VPN, choose the one that best suits your needs, and start browsing the Internet in a safe and secure manner.

What Do We Consider When Reviewing Free VPNs?

  • Does not require any payment information during registration
  • Does not collect user activity logs
  • Strong security features & no IP or DNS leak
  • With the largest data limit possible
  • No limit on download speeds
  • Easy-to-use applications and good customer support

Best Free (Secure) VPN Services

1. Windscribe Free VPN Service

  • Minimum logging policy
  • Good same country speeds
  • Built-in VPN kill key
  • 10 server locations
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Works with (sometimes) Netflix and BBC iPlayer

  • Monthly data limit (still generous)
  • No live chat support

Windscribe is currently the best free VPN service.

It’s a very secure VPN that will keep you safe online, and it’s also one of the fastest free VPN services we’ve tested.

The free version of Windscribe also has many privacy features. (Like VPN kill switch)

It also does not collect and record any user activity log. Your connections are protected by AES-256 encryption and the OpenVPN security protocol (IKEv2 is also available).

Of course, the data limit of 10 GB per month is somewhat restrictive, but much more generous than other secure free VPN applications.

Windscribe free VPN works well on Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android. What he can’t do very well is unblock Netflix, BBC iPlayer and other streaming services. Most free VPNs are having the same problem.

Overall, Windscribe is the best free VPN for ordinary users or new ones in the VPN world.

2. ProtonVPN Free VPN Service

  • Membership does not require payment information
  • Reliable download speeds
  • No data limit
  • VPN kill switch & DNS leak protection
  • Minimum logging policy

  • Only 3 VPN server locations
  • Torrent not allowed
  • Does not work with Netflix or BBC iPlayer
  • A concurrent connection

ProtonVPN’s free VPN service is private, secure and comes with no speed or data restrictions.

Unlike Windscribe, ProtonVPN’s free VPN service is not only in the first place because you can use it on one device at a time.

You can use the free version of ProtonVPN on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices, all of which use OpenVPN, the most secure VPN connection protocol.

ProtonVPN is very fast despite the very limited VPN server network of only three countries in the world (Japan, the Netherlands and the USA).

ProtonVPN’s minimal logging policy means that it is also very secure, and the built-in VPN kill key adds an extra layer of protection only in this case.

However, both Netflix and BBC iPlayer are not good for streaming when access is denied. Torrent is also prohibited on all free servers of ProtonVPN.

ProtonVPN can be a good option for you if you need to use VPN on just one device.

3. TunnelBear Free VPN Service

  • No user activity log
  • Consistently good speeds
  • Enhanced security features
  • Own DNS servers
  • 22 VPN server locations

  • 500 MB data limit per month
  • Does not work with Netflix or BBC iPlayer
  • Limited customer support

TunnelBear’s free VPN is the perfect choice for beginners who only want a (very) lightweight web crawl.

TunnelBear is not only simple and easy to use, but also has one of the largest server networks we’ve seen from a free service: 22 countries worldwide, including the US, UK and Australia.

The free version of TunnelBear is fully functional, but unfortunately has a data limit of 500 MB per month. If you tweet about the TunnelBear app, you get an extra 1GB.

What is certain is that TunnelBear cares about the privacy of its users. Some of the highlights:

  • First-party DNS servers
  • VPN kill key

VPN applications can be installed on all popular platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS and Android) and each application is encrypted with top encryption AES-256.

We recommend TunnelBear to VPN users who don’t need a lot of bandwidth each month, otherwise you should choose Windscribe.

4. Free VPN Service

  • Minimum logging policy
  • Powerful privacy features
  • Good same country speeds
  • User-friendly custom applications
  • No bandwidth restrictions

  • Very slow long distance speeds
  • 2GB monthly data limit
  • Only 5 VPN server locations
  • Only one concurrent connection’s free VPN is one of the most secure free VPNs. It has a robust privacy-oriented registration policy and additional security features, such as a VPN kill key.

It’s also one of the fastest free VPN services we’ve tested on the same country connections. However, long distance connections are a different story: speed slows to a useful level, however.

You can install on all popular devices and routers. You can also choose from a variety of VPN security protocols (we recommend OpenVPN).

Note that TunnelBear has a 2GB monthly data limit, which is somewhat generous than the 500 MB allowance. Windscribe and ProtonVPN are better for data headers.

Another limitation of is that you can only connect to five server locations: the Netherlands, Canada, Singapore and the United States (East and West).

Want to use this free VPN for streaming? Forget it, all major publishing sites will block links.

However, is a very good VPN for online privacy and security unless you transfer a lot of data.

5. Avira Phantom Free VPN Service

  • Minimum logging policy
  • Good download speed
  • Strong encryption
  • Sometimes works with Netflix
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections

  • No manual server selection
  • 1GB monthly data limit
  • No VPN kill key
  • No customer support

The free version of Avira Phantom VPN is a simple and straightforward VPN that provides a basic level of privacy.

It also uses the OpenVPN protocol (separate from the iOS application using IKEv2) and uses AES-256 encryption.

However, we are disappointed that there is no VPN kill switch that all VPNs above have.

Avira’s speeds are surprisingly good, but you can’t choose the VPN location to connect to. Avira Phantom automatically connects you to the nearest server.

If you give Avira your email address, you will receive 1GB of data each month. Otherwise, you will only get 500 MB. Avira sometimes works with Netflix, sometimes it doesn’t.

As a result, Avira’s free VPN is best suited for anyone who wants to secure their internet connections from time to time.

Are Free VPN Services Secure?

Unfortunately, many free VPN services are not secure and you should not hand over your personal data to them.

When we tested free VPN applications, we found that an extremely high number was potentially unsafe.

We also investigated who was behind some of the most popular free VPNs. It appears that more than 60% have very controversial links with China, which is a concern for privacy.

Don’t worry, we’ve carefully tested the VPNs we recommend in this manual and are 100% safe.

Worst Free VPNs

Here is a list of (not exhaustive) free VPN services to avoid:

  • Hola Free VPN
  • VPN Proxy Master
  • Turbo VPN
  • Thunder VPN
  • Snap VPN

Free vs Paid: Should I pay for VPN?

First of all, the free VPN services listed come with our approval stamp. We tested every VPN for weeks and were delighted with what we saw.

However, even the best free VPN cannot compete with most paid VPNs. They lack high speeds, extensive server options and extra features.

Basically, a good free VPN is great for beginners or casual users, but you need to use a paid VPN service for the best experience. These lists of suggestions are a good starting point:

Many free VPN services have good enough speeds, but is the fastest free VPN (currently).

It should be noted that free VPN speeds vary greatly depending on the time of day you connect and how many users are connected to the same VPN server.
