Best VPN Extensions for Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is one of the five most downloaded web browsers in the world. With a market share of 6%, it still lags behind Google Chrome with an amazing performance of 60%.

Firefox has the perception that it’s more exclusive than Chrome, but with a few extra features, Firefox doesn’t protect your personal data more than Chrome.

So it is essential to use VPN with Firefox.

VPNs prevent your ISP from viewing everything you do online and protect your confidential data from potential enthusiasts and hackers.

If you are a heavy browser user, you may want to use a VPN browser plug-in instead of the full VPN desktop application.

All the VPNs we recommend in this list come with browser extensions that encrypt your traffic to keep you safe online. Our best VPN choices for Firefox also provide high speeds, minimum (or even zero) logging and access to content from around the world.

VPN Features for Firefox

  • Secure browser extension for Mozilla Firefox
  • Privacy-friendly logging policy & no IP, DNS or WebRTC leak
  • High and reliable speeds
  • Quick and easy to install
  • Effective privacy and security features
  • Well designed and easy to use for private VPN applications

Best 5 VPN Extensions for Firefox

1. ExpressVPN

  • Control desktop VPN with Firefox browser extension
  • Excellent VPN speeds and reliability
  • Works with Netflix, iPlayer and other streaming services
  • WebRTC leak protection
  • VPN servers in 94 countries
  • Privacy-friendly logging policy

  • More expensive than competitors

ExpressVPN is the best choice for the best VPN and Firefox users we’ve ever tested.

In addition to a wide range of custom VPN applications for desktop, mobile, and streaming devices, ExpressVPN offers a secure browser extension for Firefox.

Unlike most VPN browser extensions, ExpressVPN’s plug-in works with the main VPN application to provide full device protection.

This means that you can control the VPN without having to exit the browser.

ExpressVPN encrypts internet traffic with ‘unbreakable’ password AES-256 and comes with a Firefox kill key, WebRTC leak blocking and HTTPS Anywhere to make your connection even more secure.

Although ExpressVPN’s browser extension is one of the safest VPN browsers on the market, it is not a lightweight solution because it passes all traffic through the VPN tunnel.

If you’re a heavy browser user and only want to protect your browser traffic, read on to find out which Firefox VPN is best for you.

If you want to fully control your VPN from your web browser, ExpressVPN is the service for you.

2. NordVPN

  • Lightweight proxy extension for Firefox browser
  • Very good VPN speeds
  • WebRTC leak protection
  • Consistent access to Netflix and BBC iPlayer
  • Strict zero-day policy
  • VPN servers in 60 countries

  • Browser extension and desktop application cannot be used together

NordVPN is another great VPN for Firefox users and provides something a little different from ExpressVPN.

NordVPN’s browser extension for Firefox encrypts your browser traffic while avoiding other unprotected internet traffic. This means that it does not provide the same security and privacy as desktop applications, making NordVPN’s HTTPS proxy extension ideal for those looking for a lightweight solution for fast browsing.

NordVPN’s Firefox plug-in includes WebRTC anti-leak protection to protect your IP address and comes with CyberSec, which blocks ads.

If you want full VPN coverage, you can use NordVPN’s mobile applications, which are very safe to use and will protect your Firefox traffic and all other applications.

NordVPN does not recommend a combination of browser leak and desktop application, because it can cause IP leakage.

3. Windscribe

  • Extra-featured Firefox browser extension
  • Very good speeds
  • Prevents WebRTC leaks
  • Works with Netflix
  • VPN servers in 58 countries
  • Minimum logging

  • Speed is not as good as our best choice
  • No live support

Windscribe’s latest update to the browser extension range makes it a powerful competitor for the best VPN for Firefox.

The browser extension for Firefox has more features than other features we see; Prevent WebRTC leakage; an ad, tracker and malware blocker; and easily change your GPS location and browser clock to suit your proxy location.

Like NordVPN’s browser extension, Windscribe encrypts browser traffic, but traffic outside the browser still uses your actual IP address.

Windscribe has plans to remotely control the desktop application via the browser extension, as was the case with ExpressVPN’s browser extension.

Then why isn’t Windscribe on top of our list?

First of all, the speeds don’t exactly match the speed of our best VPN selections (although they are not slow).

Then there’s a lack of live chat support. You can talk to Windscribe’s live chat boat ‘Garry’, but he doesn’t always understand your questions, which means that you need to contact email support, which can be a bit slow at times.

However, Windscribe’s new and improved browser extension makes it one of the best VPNs for Firefox users.

4. Private Internet Access

  • Handy proxy extension for Firefox
  • WebRTC leak prevention
  • One of the fastest VPNs available
  • Works with Netflix
  • Uninterrupted logging policy

  • VPN servers in 32 countries only
  • Live chat from time to time

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a super fast and secure VPN for Firefox users.

Like NordVPN and Windscribe, the proxy extension encrypts browser traffic but does not protect other applications.

However, you can use the desktop application and browser extension at the same time for maximum protection.

PIA follows a non-logging policy for your privacy and is one of the fastest VPNs on the market. The Firefox browser plug-in also prevents WebRTC leaks.

However, if access to global content is your goal, the PIA may not be for you.

Live chat support is only available during certain hours, so if you encounter any issues outside of certain times, you’ll have to wait a little longer to respond to email support. Despite this, the PIA is still a solid choice for Firefox users who want the best speeds.

5. Surfshark

  • Secure Firefox proxy extension
  • Above average VPN speeds
  • Works with Netflix and iPlayer
  • VPN servers in 50 countries
  • Zero logging policy

  • Speed is overshadowed by our best choices
  • Browser extension does not block WebRTC

Surfshark is a fairly new log no VPN, but it promises too much. The secure Firefox proxy plugin is a welcome bonus.

Firefox offers users a ‘CleanWeb’ tool to block ads, viewers, and malware.

Unfortunately, Surfshark’s browser extensions don’t automatically block WebRTC requests, so you’ll have to manually disable Firefox’s settings.

Surfshark’s speeds are not as good as our best VPN recommendations, but it will be fast enough for the average browser user.

We hope to see more improvements as Surfshark continues to build itself in the VPN market, such as integrated WebRTC blocking.

Why Use VPN for Firefox?

Although Firefox has the reputation of being a more privacy-friendly alternative to Google Chrome, it does not fully protect your personal data from prying or malicious third parties.

Even if you use Passwords, cookies, and Private Browsing, which locally deletes your browsing information locally (such as Chrome’s Hidden mode), your ISP and hidden holders that listen to your traffic can see that you’re going online.

Therefore, you should still use a VPN when using Firefox Private Browsing.

VPNs encrypt all internet traffic flowing from your device and mask your IP address with a new IP address of the VPN server.

This will keep your online activities private.

But that’s not the only reason you’re using a VPN with Firefox.

VPNs also allow you to access restricted content – your school, library, or government implementing blocks.

If you are using a VPN application on your desktop computer, there is no need to install a browser extension because your browser traffic will pass through the encrypted VPN tunnel.

However, using an extension still has some benefits.

Browser extensions often come with additional features such as ad and malware blockers and WebRTC leak protection. These are sometimes missing in the main VPN applications.

Using a browse extension is a lightweight alternative to using a device-wide VPN, so you can experience better browsing speeds.

If you’re a busy browser user and only want to protect browser traffic, a VPN plug-in for Firefox might be a good solution for you.
